Solovki Special Purpose Camp (SLON) was the first and the most well-known large forced labor camp for political prisoners of the Soviet Union. Located in a harsh climate of the hard-to-reach Solovetsky archipelago, it has gained its notoriety since the very beginning of its existence, while the name “Solovki” has soon become the symbol of Soviet political repressions. It was the “mother of the GULAG” according to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn,

Political dissenters and heretics were sent to the islands even in Imperial Russia, but the sinister prison system started operating full out only after the Bolshevik Revolution. The exact number of prisoners who went through the camp during 1923–1939 estimates range between tens and hundreds of thousands.

“And so all the northern portion of the Archipelago sprang from Solovki... this was an open and aboveboard system of

destruction, of death camps! Oh, no, we are not so simple! In that first experimental camp, as in others afterward, and in the most comprehensive of them all, we never act openly. It is all mixed up, layer upon layer. And that is why it is so long-lasting and so successful.”

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. The Gulag Archipelago.

Since the XVI century and during 400 years monks and other dwellers have been patiently creating channels between innumerous lakes. Taking into account the difference in levels of the lakes monks tried to direct waters by gravity.
